What constitutes a sorority event?

The official definition of a sorority event is: “Any event or activity sponsored or orchestrated by the chapter or sorority.” However, that narrow definition does not cover what could potentially be considered a sorority event. When we talk about this with our clients, we often reference the saying, “if it looks like a duck and talks like a duck, it’s a duck.” Meaning that, if an activity or event looks like a chapter event, a judge and jury are likely to conclude that it was a chapter event. It is important that you file your sorority’s event planning guidelines and contact your sorority’s headquarters if you are confused as to whether or not an activity qualifies as a “sorority event.”
